(cross post) Feeding concern

OK, I know the whole thing about Ball Pythons periodically going on hunger strike, etc., and that, a few weeks won’t hurt them. But, nonetheless, I am concerned.

Dex has refused food twice now. I know he’s hungry because he’s in that “hunting” mode. So why isn’t he eating? The first time, I figured maybe, even though it was thawed, the rat wasn’t warm enough. So this time, I made sure the rat was thoroughly warm.

Like I said, he’s acting hungry. So why is he refusing food. Any suggestions on what I should do? What is the “proper” temperature for rats when I put them in?

It has now been about 3 weeks since he’s eaten. And Dex eats every 7-10 days like clockwork. He’s always been a very good/healthy eater. So, even though, technically, it is not something to worry about, he’s acting out of character which could mean something is wrong.

Any suggestions?

7-10 days seems a little too frequent in my opinion. Dex could probably go for 2 months without food and be allright but what you said about his being in "hunting mode" suggests there may be something else going on. Are your rats from a different source this time? Are they of similar/consisten size? Could they be freezer burned (that might change their scent)? PS: never thaw and refreeze but you probably knew that. A couple of suggestions 1) Try live food with close supervision 2) Try a gerbil...I've heard this can get Balls off of a hunger strike 3) Cool down his tank a little to represent a seasonal change sometimes necessary for maturation (if he is a male). Oh yes, rats do not need to be warm when you feed them they just need to be thawed completely. Are you using tongs to present the rat?

      OK, lots of questions/answers.....

OK, I've been feeding a medium or small rat (depending on availability) from the same store. When he ate last (3 weeks), it was a small rat, but about a week before that, it was a medium rat. So when he didn't eat last week, it made sense. He was probably still full.

But this week, he's really doing the hungry routine. I didn't notice any freezer burn, but I"m not sure how to tell.

Not quite ready to try live food (that will be a last last last resort). I adopted Dex because he was already accustomed to frozen/thawed food.

WHen he doesn't eat, I always throw it away.

OK, now a question. As I noted, I cross posted on the Bellydancing/Snake Lovers tribe. Someone there is experiencing a similar thing with a boa. Her boa is now 3 years old and she suggested it might have to do with becoming an adult??? Dex is three years old (approx.). I've had him almost a year. He eats like clockwork. Could his age be a factor? He's full grown now and doesn't need to eat as often?

BTW, Dex is approximately 4 feet now......which, for a male Ball, is about complete. He might grow another foot.....but not necessarily.

Thank you for all the ideas and information you've provided so far. It is greatly appreciated.
